This coffee marks the third time we have brought the exceptional coffees from Prakashan & Mohan Balaraman to consumers in Australia. Riverdale Estate is a producer pushing the boundaries of what specialty coffee from India can be. Back in 2021, we brought in a fruit infused series that truly displayed their innovative approach. You can catch out Director of Coffee, Roy, discussing these coffees with Prakashan & Mohan back in 2021 by clicking HERE.
Riverdale Estate is located in the Shevaroy Hills of India, where the conditions are ideal for specialty coffee. Hilly terrain, nutrient rich soil, consistent rainfall and cool and misty climate – all encourage the slow ripening of cherries which increase sugar accumulation and complex flavours. Riverdale uses shade-grown practices meaning the coffee trees are nurtured under the natural canopy of native trees. This maintains soil health, supports biodiversity and shields cherries from excessive sunlight; ultimately ensuring steady cherry development. Finally, Riverdale utilizes hand picking so only cherries at peak maturity are harvested.
This time around, we’ve brought some great coffees for exceptional value.
The first being their washed process. This coffee begins by picking the SL9 variety before it is floated to remove underripe cherries. The cherries are then pulped using clean spring water, mucilage removed and soaked for 12 hours. The next day, the beans are rinsed with spring water again and floated again. The beans are then immersed in clean water for 24-30 more hours. Lastly, the beans are dried on raised beds for 25-30 days until they reach 11% moisture.
We’ve also been privileged to secure their ‘Aroma Natural’ process, and ‘Mosto’ process coffees.
